A sun dragon

A Sun dragon is a draconic creature that prefers to live on the surface of a sun from the Spelljammer campaign setting.[1]

Overview[]

Sun dragons live almost exclusively on the surface of suns and other fire-type celestial bodies.[1]

Description[]

A sun dragon's coloration changes as it ages, similar to what happens to a star as it ages. As hatchlings, sun dragons are a fiery-red color; as juveniles they are a burnt-orange; as mature adults they are a brilliant-yellow; and as venerable adults they are a bluish-white. Finally, when a sun dragon becomes a Great Wyrm, it shrinks in size similar to a young sun dragon, and turns a flat white color. Some have confused these ancient sun dragons for very young moon dragons, at great risk to their own lives.

Sun dragons speak their own dialect of draconic, as well as that commonly spoken by all good dragons. They also speak the common trade tongue.[1]

Behavior[]

Sun dragon's are majestic, highly intelligent and playful. They love life and freedom, and love to cavort across the surface of the suns where they live. Although they are a benevolent and happy race, they hate moon dragons and consider them mortal enemies.[1]

Combat[]

Sun dragons are not a naturally belligerent race, and considering they lair on the scorching hot surfaces of various fire worlds, they rarely have to face opponents who can get close enough to invade their homes. If necessary, a sun dragon will use its breath weapon to soften up opponents, then pause to give them the opportunity to reconsider and retreat, before charging into combat and tearing them apart with their teeth and claws.

Sun dragons are playful and sometimes act like big cats, picking up their enemies, batting them around, and swatting them into the air. Their Opponents are often so battered that it takes them a minute to regain their composure so that they can take appropriate action.

A sun dragon's breath weapon takes the form of a fireball which it can "spit" up to a distance of 240-feet, and which explodes with a blast radius between 5 and 60 feet (depending on the dragon's age). The dragon can also coat the fiery wad with its special saliva, which delays the explosion for up to 10 minutes, allowing the dragon to control the detonation time exactly.

As a sun dragon matures it gains the ability to use certain spell-like abilities 3 times per day (24 hours):[1]

  • Juvenile dragons can use heat metal as per the spell.
  • Adult dragons can use fire shield as per the spell.
  • Very old dragons can use prismatic spray as per the spell.

When a sun dragon takes flight, its entire body is suffused by continual light. Sun dragons are immune to all forms of fire though they are susceptible to cold-based attacks. A sun dragon also has the innate ability to detect the presence of a moon dragon in its crystal sphere.[1]

Society[]

Sun dragons scoop out the fiery matter on a sun's surface and hollow out good-sized caverns to serve as their lairs. When a female dragon lays her clutch of up to 5 fire-resistant eggs, she causes a solar flare to erupt on the sun's surface. A sun dragon's hoard is coated with its saliva which prevents the objects from melting into nothingness. When the items are removed from the heat of the sun, the saliva solidifies into a kind of sleet that can be easily removed.

Sun dragons will eat anything, but they are careful not to eat intelligent creatures, for they respect all life.[1]

Uses[]

When a sun dragon dies of old age, its body collapses in on itself, creating a sphere of annihilation, or more rarely, a well of many worlds. These creations are unstable and will eventually dissipate unless a permanency spell is cast upon them.[1]
