Mongrelle, Master Breeder and Court Sorceress, was the High Councilor to Emperor Vulkaran, the absolute ruler of the Vodoni Empire in the Spelljammer campaign setting.[1][2]

Overview[]

Mongrelle was Court Sorceress and High Councillor to Vulkaran the Dark, emperor and absolute ruler of the Vodoni Empire. Together they ruled over twelve subjugated spheres, and while Vulkaran concentrated on military matters, Mongrelle was especially adept at politics (i.e. espionage and spying). For this reason, opposition forces such as the Crystal Order feared Mongrelle and her relatively small number of Vodoni breeders far more than all of Vulkaran’s military forces combined.[1]

Description[]

Mongrelle was a beautiful woman who wore black and red robes and carried a gnarled wooden staff at her side. A sweet smile often crossed her lips as she carried out the most horrific of acts.[3]

Personality[]

Mongrelle was as lovely as she was cruel, and was known to personally carry out public executions by transforming into a great red dragon to consume her enemies.[1] She was also considered something of a genius,[4] and could be quite pragmatic as she willingly abandoned her allies to save herself.[5]

Possessions[]

Mongrelle wore a pair of bracers of defense, a cloak of protection and a ring of protection. She also carried a staff of the magi, a rod of absorption, a potion of flying, a potion of invisibility and three potions of extra healing.[1] She owned a spell book, and was the only person to actually possess a written version of the eagle vision spell.[6]

Activities[]

Vodoni breeders[]

As Master Breeder, Mongrelle was responsible for training the Vodoni breeders and preparing them for their future duties. She began by forcibly "recruiting" suitably intelligent and willful Vodoni citizens and erasing their memories. The candidates were then put through a grueling training programme as warriors. Those who excelled were rendered immune to the Vodoni strain of lycanthropy and began their schooling in the Dark Arts under her tutelage.[7] Later, Mongrelle would empower those who were initiated into the High Circle with the ability to use eagle vision at will (as per the spell).[8]

Vodni enforcers[]

Mongrelle and her horrid subordinates were responsible for creating the dread Vodoni enforcers from otherwise normal human beings. Vodoni citizens were abducted during mass gatherings (such as the monthly Full Moon feasts in the Imperial City) and taken to the Undercity, where they were infected with lycanthropy. Victims of the Vodoni strain of lycanthropy are nearly mindless and vicious in the extreme, and were kept in pits where they were allowed to feed, and breed, and fight and grow stronger. The strongest were selected for "testing", where they were force-fed a toxic potion. Those who survived were recruited as loyal Enforcers; those who did not were nothing more than meat to be fed to the mindless monsters in the pits.[4][9]

Relationships[]

Companions[]

Despite rumors to the contrary, Mongrelle was not Vulkaran’s mistress. Rather she was his companion and confidant and together they ruled the Twelve Spheres.[1]
