A Gullion is a large gull-like bird from the Spelljammer campaign setting.[1]

Overview[]

Gullions are related to terrestrial seagulls but have adapted to life in wildspace. Spelljamming crews consider them to be pests because they waste precious air and demand a great deal of food.[1]

Description[]

Gullions resemble large gulls, standing 3-feet tall when upright. Due to their prolonged exposure to several unusual environments, they can display a wide variety in plumage, including purple and orange, as well as the standard gull marking of white and grey.[1]

Combat[]

Gullions are scavengers and will try to steal food. As such they are incredibly sneaky, and have even been known to stage diversions in order to get their beaks on someone's dinner.

Gullions only pose a threat when extremely hungry and in large numbers. If a large flock of gulls haven't eaten in days, they attack the nearest source of food – usually crew members on a ship. They flock together and attack with their beaks, trying to knock foes unconscious. Once a crew member has been knocked out, the gullions search the body for food. If there isn't enough food to satisfy them, they start eating the victim.

Many novice crews plagued with gullions try to kill as many as possible as soon as they enter wildspace. This is difficult, for the gulls have adapted to the air envelope around ships and use the gravity plane to fly erratically. More experienced crews tolerate the colorful birds, and usually cast food out into the air envelope to keep the scavengers satisfied.[1]

Habitat[]

Gullions can survive in almost any environment. Large populations are known to exist in many port towns and cities, including the Rock of Bral, where several hundred gullions flock together.[2] Gullions will hitch a ride with a spelljamming vessel, travelling from one world to another. The gulls have to remain within the ship's air envelope, as they have no spelljamming ability of their own. Gullions have adapted to a ship's gravity plane and actually sleep while floating along the plane. Upon landfall, gullions often jump ship and may inhabit a particular port town their whole lives. Planet-bound natives often wonder where these colorful gulls suddenly appeared from.

Gullions aren't picky about what they eat: rats, garbage, and leftovers all form part of their diet. Some innkeepers even encourage gullions to stick around, primarily to eat the remnants of the previous days leftovers. Nesting areas for flocks of gullions with exceptionally bright colors often become tourist attractions. This can lead to nasty infighting between bar owners about which establishment owns a particular flock. The gullions don't care, as long as they get fed.[1]
