A Glass of Distant Vision is a magical spyglass developed by the silver dragons of Edill in the Spelljammer campaign setting.[1]

Description[]

A glass of distant vision resembles a standard brass spyglass (also known as a telescope) about eighteen inches long, tapering from three inches in diameter at one end down to the eyepiece, which is about one inch in diameter.

Powers[]

A glass of distant vision functions as a standard spyglass with 8x magnification (meaning that any abject viewed through the glass appears 8 times closer than it actually is). However, once a unique command word is spoken, the glass's magnification increases to 80x (meaning that an object 80 miles away will appear as if it were only a mile away). Repeating the command word will deactivate the glass of distant vision, reverting it to 8x magnification.

Once a glass has been magically activated, the magnification can be increased even further by turning a narrow ring surrounding the eyepiece. Turning the ring a full 360° clockwise increases the magnification to 250x. Turning the ring 360° counterclockwise will return the glass to 80x magnification. At full magnification, a normal spyglass has an extremely narrow field of vision, and can be difficult to hold steady. When the command word is spoken, the glass of distant vision becomes magically stabilized in some fashion, allowing the glass to be trained on a particular abject as long as the user wishes. This stabilization does not function when the glass has been deactivated.

History[]

The glass of distant vision is based on magical technology developed by the silver dragons of Skyhaven on Edill. However, the magical devices were actually constructed by a human mage by the name of Revorian, since the dragons themselves had no desire to put their theories into practice.

Revorian created approximately two dozen glasses of distant vision before his untimely death. but since he never passed on the creation process, nobody else has been able to replicate his work.
